The Pilates Studio @ Dogma Athletica, or "Dogma Pilates" for short, was established in 2007 to provide a unique approach to whole body health and wellness through the Pilates method.
As a fully-equipped boutique studio specializing in the traditional teachings of the Pilates Method, our focus is to give you personalized attention and empower you to be in control of your own health and well-being through the Pilates Method. Our philosophy at Dogma Pilates is that the human body loves to move and performs best when allowed to do so, regardless of age or physical condition. We also know to be true that most individuals harbor untapped emotional and physical potential that is just waiting to be unleashed.
So What is Pilates?
Using your deep core muscles to strengthen and stretch, Pilates focuses on creating long, lean, flexible muscles and joints. You will improve circulation, breath control, range of motion, coordination and postural symmetry through graceful movement patterns. Because your muscles interact naturally as you move in life, Pilates does not isolate muscles individually. Instead each graceful movement strengths, reshapes and re-educates your body as a whole.
HISTORY + Joseph Pilates
Developed by Joseph Pilates in 1920, Pilates has been the regimen of choice for competitive athletes, dancers, physical therapists, those recovering from injury and the general public. Joseph Pilates believed physical fitness was "the attainment and maintenance of a uniformly developed body with a sound mind fully capable of naturally, easily, and satisfactorily performing our many and varied daily tasks with spontaneous zest and pleasure."
Developed over a 60 year span by German-born Joseph Pilates, Pilates is a system of exercises that encompasses complete coordination of body, mind and spirit. In 1926, Joseph and his wife Claire brought Pilates, originally called "contrology", to New York City. Through this system of exercises now called Pilates you develop muscle strength, increased flexibility and range of motion. Utilizing the specialized equipment that Joseph developed, the method focuses on toning muscles as well as balancing range of motion at the joint level. "Through Pilates you first purposefully acquire complete control of your own body and then through proper repetition of its exercises you gradually and progressively acquire that natural rhythm and coordination associated with all your subconscious activities." (Pilates 1945)
